Delphi

Famous in the ancient times due to its famous oracle, the (ancient) city of Delphi continues to attract visitors from every corner of the world. Besides there is convenient and easy access from Athens (two and a half hours), as well as the proximity to popular weekend destinations like Arachova, Parnassos and Galaxidi. Coming from Arachove, the first you will see is the ancient city. With the background of the vertical cliffs of the Phedriadon and the olive groves of the Pleistos valley pouring to Krissaios field, the archaeological site unfolds both sides of the main asphalt road.

The wandering in the history can start from the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, where the mysterious dome and the gymnasium are located on the left side of the road, and then continue along the Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the route the ancient pilgrims followed, adorned with numerous building and offerings (the treasure of the Sikyonians, the Sifnians, the Megareans, the Athenians). After passing by the rock of Sibyl and the Stoa of Athens, you will encounter the Temple of Apollo, the site where according to tradition the priestess Pythia uttered in a state of sacred inebriety unintelligible oracles. Then you will find the theatre, while following a steep path for 15 minutes you get to the stadium. The archaeological walk ends at the museum, where the most famous discoveries of archaeological research are presented.

The modern town of Delphi extends further to the ancient one, but due to the geographical terrain it is not visible from it. Perched on the southern edges of Parnassus, the modern city has not kept any particular architectural character, but offers excellent view to the olive groves of Amfissa and the bay of Itea. Tourist traffic is concentrated on the two main roads (Paul & Frederica and Apollo), where you will find shops with folklore souvenirs, taverns and trendy cafes with view.
